Waterproof, water-repellent or windproof: what's the difference?

A women's rain jacket is waterproof due to a coated fabric or membrane, and its seams are sealed. A water-repellent jacket causes water to bead on the surface: it's enough for a shower, not for steady rain.

A windproof jacket mainly protects against the wind; lightweight and compressible, it fits into a bag and is useful for hiking or cycling. A breathable membrane on a waterproof jacket allows sweat to escape during exertion.
