Plus size women's hooded parkas

The plus size women's parka protects against the cold, wind, and rain: a long cut that covers the hips, a hood often trimmed, water-repellent or waterproof fabric, and a warm lining for winter. It's the coat for damp days.

A long parka with a hood replaces the umbrella in light rain.

What is a parka?

Originally military, the parka is a long coat with a hood, often cinched at the waist with an inner drawstring. Its wind and water-resistant fabric, along with its more or less warm lining, makes it the versatile coat for autumn and winter.

Parka or down jacket?

The parka offers better protection from rain and wind thanks to its fabric and hood; the down jacket, being more puffy, keeps you warmer in dry, cold weather. A parka lined with warm material combines both qualities for a wet winter.

What length to choose?

A long parka, which reaches the thighs or knees, protects the legs from rain and wind and elongates the silhouette. A mid-length parka, at the hips, provides more freedom and can be worn with trousers.

A parka for a curvy figure

The drawstring at the waist, found on many parkas, helps accentuate the figure. A straight, long cut elongates the body, and a dark colour slims down. Avoid bulky patch pockets on the hips, and opt for discreet welt pockets instead.

Water-resistant or waterproof?

A water-resistant parka beads off water and withstands light rain. For heavy downpours, only a waterproof parka with sealed seams really keeps you dry. A water-resistant parka is often sufficient for the city; for the countryside or mountains, you should prefer a waterproof one.

Choosing the right size

A parka is worn over a sweater: try it on with one. It should close without pulling, allow you to raise your arms, and cover your wrists. Measure your hip circumference for a long parka: it should close all the way down without pulling, so you can sit and walk comfortably.

How to care for a parka?

Wash it at 30 °C, with zips and buttons closed, using a liquid detergent without fabric softener. When the water no longer beads, a water-repellent spray will restore its protection. Let it dry hanging.

Other plus-size coats

For dry cold, check out plus-size down jackets; for the city, plus-size jackets and coats. Two alternatives to the parka.

When to find discounted plus-size parkas?

The parka is sought after at the arrival of rainy autumn: Black Friday and winter sales are the two key times for a discounted plus-size parka.

Look for the Black Friday parkas page in November, the Sales page in winter, and the Promotions page all year round. Fast shipping and lowest price guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a parka warm enough for winter?

If it is lined or padded, yes. A lightweight parka can be worn over a thick sweater in very cold weather.

How to wear a parka stylishly?

Open over a monochrome outfit, with ankle boots and a scarf. The drawstring pulled in at the waist defines the silhouette.

Can the fur on the hood be washed?

Often, it can be detached: remove it before washing and brush it separately. Check the label.

Kaki or black parka?

Kaki is the original colour, casual; black is dressier and goes with everything. Both match well with jeans.

What is the difference between a parka and an anorak?

The anorak is pulled over the head, with a partial opening; the parka fully opens. The parka is longer.
